The 1st Jewel to Run Your Own Race

Choose carefully your running partners - the people you allow in your life to share your dream.

This is a continuation of the post from yesterday titled RUN YOUR OWN RACE where I examine the three jewels of wisdom we can glean from the phenomenal accomplishments of the greatest champion horse racing has ever seen, Secretariat, and his visionary owner, Penny Chenery.

Today, we are examining the 1st Jewel in the Crown of Joyful Achieving: Choose carefully the people you allow to be in your life and share your dream.

Penny Chenery carefully chose her running partners.

* The famous Secretariat, who stood up as a newborn colt sooner than any horse known, ready to jump full speed into Life … her brother called him the horse nobody wanted. Ah, but she did!

* The jockey Ron Turcotte who never gave up despite broken limbs and in spite of the tragedy of having just ridden a horse who died after his last race. She recognized his dauntless spirit the moment they met – despite the cast and crutch he wore to their first meeting, he was ready to ride again. She knew he was the rider for her horse, a perfect match in their fearlessness.

* The trainer Lucien Laurin who had eccentric ways without regard to the opinions of others, and despite grumblings of retirement couldn’t walk away with his ultimate dream unfulfilled. She instinctively knew that, and chose him as her trainer who would find a way, or make his own way.

* Her father’s trusted assistant, Elizabeth Hamm whose loyalty and spunk provided the steady hand of support in the midst of turbulence. The handler Eddie Sweat who it was said could touch a horse and communicate through his fingers, and who loved Big Red as much as Penney and knew the horse better than anyone except Penny.

* And there was Seth Hancock, the son of her father’s partner and dearest friend, Bull. Even as a young businessman, whose grooming was unfinished due to his father’s untimely death, Seth stepped boldly into a business venture never before heard of, and pulled it off with amazing audacity.

What a team of brave, resilient, innovative spirits this visionary woman chose to run with her and her colt, full speed toward this cherished and incredible goal! She was fearless, and alongside Penny and Secretariat, so were they.

No single one of them could have won that triumph alone. Certainly, it required the superb talent of the horse. But also, the confident wisdom of the trainer, the dauntless courage of the jockey, the steadfastness of the handler, the loyalty of the secretary, and the boldness of the young business man. All of their gifts were led by the pure undeviating vision of the owner. Quite an assembly of remarkable spirits.

Who are your running partners in life? Do they encourage and support you toward your vision? Or undermine your dream and derail you from the path leading to your most cherished success and happiness?

Here’s a simple test if you are unsure of the answer.

1. Take out a sheet of paper. List the primary 10 people you spend time with, or who have a prominent role in your life.

2. Next, ask yourself … after being with each person for an hour, do you feel better than you did when you arrived? Do you feel worse? Or, about the same? Put a plus (+) or a minus (-) or an equal sign (=) next to each name, depending on your answer.

3. Now, take a deep breath … and gather yourself to do something very bold! Are you ready? Cross out all the names with a minus (-) and an equal (=) sign. Decide right now you will stop spending substantial amount of your time with anyone whose name did not get the plus (+) mark. Yes, even those with an equal sign. Here’s why.

Your time must be spent surrounded by people who uplift and support you as much as possible. Not with people who in any way tear you down or lower your energy vibration. Nor with people who are blandly riding your coat tails in life. Why spend time with people who don’t contribute to your happiness and well being? They take energy from you if they are not contributing. (By the way, be sure YOU are a person who contributes energy and inspiration to people as well, not inadvertently draining them of their precious energy.)

I realize this can be hard to execute, and I am not suggesting you do so in any way that is harsh or unloving. You can quietly make subtle shifts in your lifestyle to minimize time with people who don’t support and uplift you. Or, learn to change the energy dynamic in the relationships. For instance, if a group of friends or colleagues normally express negative or critical ideas, instead of chiming in, you can change the subject to something positive. Or, you can remain quiet but contribute powerfully by holding a sacred space of kindness and truth about the topic they are discussing. Did you know that you can learn to hold the dominant energy vibration in the room? You can! You can be so strong in your awareness of the core worthiness of yourself and others, with a strong positive vibration, that others will be uplifted and join your vibration when they are in your energy field. That’s part of what I teach in my programs as a Visualizing Coach – how to align your energy and maintain your focus in the direction YOU choose. From that point of alignment, you can then take action to achieve what you desire with leverage.

If you feel the need to end a relationship, I know that can be tough. So, here’s a couple of pieces of wisdom that helps me. First, stop evaluating people by external measures only – that is important regardless of whether it’s a positive or negative evaluation. The true measure of a person is so much more than external appearances and accomplishments. It’s ultimately about their vibration, or energy. For example, Penny chose a trainer and jockey who many considered to be eccentric and difficult. They had strong personalities and unconventional ways of doing things. She certainly didn’t fit any molds, being the first woman to break through such a male-dominated sport, and a mere “housewife” at that! Neither did Secretariat, who was a run from behind horse with both speed and endurance. She knew her horse needed a trainer with courageous thinking and a jockey with bold moves. She evaluated them based on the vibrational match they were to her vision and the needs of her horse.

Something else to consider is that some people are not by nature people who contribute to others. Do you realize people behave in ways that serve them, ultimately? I know, you probably strive to be kind and caring – I do as well, and I think most people reading this share that approach to life. Yet, we do that for a very personal reason. It brings us joy to behave that way. So, you see where I am going here? Those who do not contribute to your dream, either by overtly supporting you or by their very nature uplifting people around them, are doing so because they choose to ride the energy of others – rather than contributing energy to others. Hopefully, this will help you be strong in sorting out who you choose as your running partners going forward. Here’s another way of looking at the ending of relationships and the ability to stand in your truth, no matter what others say or do.

One of the books I treasure most is The Four Agreements, by don Miguel Ruiz. His book offers brilliant guidance to stop taking things personally that other people do or say, even when it seems intentionally demeaning. He teaches that the cause of someone’s negative behavior is never us. It is always about the other person’s choices – who they are and how they live, which is always by their choice (conscious or unconscious). As you read this excerpt, consider the various relationships in your life that it might be describing … and open yourself to the possibility of allowing the Universe to bring you relationships that will be more harmonious and fulfilling to you.

If someone is not treating you with love and respect, it is a gift if they walk away from you. If that person doesn’t walk away, you will surely endure many years of suffering with him or her. Walking away may hurt for a while, but your heart will eventually heal. Then you can choose what you really want. You will find that you don’t need to trust others as much as you need to trust yourself to make the right choices … As you make a habit of not taking anything personally, you won’t need to place your trust is what others do or say. You will only need to trust yourself to make responsible choices. You are never responsible for the actions of others; you are only responsible for you. When you truly understand this and refuse to take things personally, you can hardly be hurt by the careless comments or actions of others. If you keep this agreement, you can travel around the world with your heart completely open and no one can hurt you. You can say, “I love you,” without fear of being ridiculed or rejected. You can ask for what you need. You can say yes, or you can say no – whatever you choose – without guilt or self-judgment. You can choose to follow your heart always.

~don Miguel Ruiz, The Four Agreements

There it is! The gem of wisdom I believe to be the 1st Jewel in the Triple Crown of Achievement, which earned Penny and Secretariat their Triple Crown: Surround yourself with people who believe in you and are cheering you to the finish line! Trust yourself to make the choices that are right for you, without regard to what others are telling you is the appropriate way to go about things. Trust your instincts if relationships are not supporting your dream, stop trying so hard to make them work and seek new ones that are a better match to you and your dream. The great successes in life happen when people think outside the box, and allow themselves to color outside the lines without regard to criticism and nay-sayers. Do it your way, run your own race.

Here’s a marvelous video by Giselle Frederich with a message from The Teachings of Abraham, A New Resolve. It brings home the marvelous power and happiness we can experience when we give ourselves permission to associate only with those we enjoy being with, and to fulfill our happiness by doing the things that bring us joy. This one decision will keep you aligned more often with the energy Vortex of your inner Spirit where all the wisdom of the Universe awaits you, eager to guide you closer and closer toward your dream.

Stay tuned for my next post revealing the 2nd Jewel in the Crown of Joyful Achieving: Stop trying to be perfect, just be yourself.

As we continue to watch the Triple Crown events unfold this season, let’s take a strong hold of our own reins so we can run full speed toward our heart’s desires. Stop comparing yourself to others, and wear blinders if you must. Get in touch with your courage, keep your focus on your dream, and run your own race … with all your heart and soul. That’s what I will be doing ;-) and I would love to hear from you to share in your adventures, as well.
